“This is how it ends. Everything goes:” Heroes and Horrors in an Age without Hope

Contemporary American culture is marked by widespread feelings of anger and frustration. Kendall Phillips explores the way these feelings have circulated in popular American films over the past twenty years. Films ranging from The Purge to Captain America: The Winter Soldier have shared a theme that the systems of governance and authority are irredeemable and the fantasy that they can be utterly refused. The rhetorical dynamics and implications of this fantasy are considered as is the relationship between popular culture and politics.
